The storm has worsened, much to my dismay.

Can Jacob control the weather? If so, does the storm only affect the castle?

Hardly any cars pass by. What little traffic there is has become suspect. Perhaps an optical illusion is blocking their path...

But no being, even a vampire, could hold that much power.

Yet Jacob refuses to admit all his abilities. I doubt he is even fully aware of them—the vampiric condition is, according to him, mysterious to all.

The dark-skinned face of the vampire I met in the forest comes back to me, along with his sad, piercing gaze.

Aron.

Should I agree to help him? Aron doesn’t seem like a liar—just a wounded man.

But he is a vampire, and the first one I’ve encountered outside of Jacob. Nothing proves his honesty in this matter.

Exhausted by my indecision, I head to the bathroom adjacent to my bedroom and open the toiletry bag provided for me.

Inside, several high-end accessories. Wearing a T-shirt, I contemplate myself for a moment in the mirror, then grab the eyeshadow and start applying makeup.

My gaze turns dark. Good—I hate the idea of being a manipulable victim. I am not just a tool, but a living being.

Next, eyeliner.

I draw black lines beside my eyes, as if they extend to the edges of my cheekbones.

This way, I’ll look like a murderer. And no one will bother me.

Then pale foundation on my skin, to make it even more cadaveric. Now I look exactly like a ghost; I let my hair down and let it wave to the side of my temples.

Seductive, but perverse.

Like a wolf inhabited by the spirit of a snake.

The image draws a sadistic laugh from me, and I conclude this tableau with a touch of bright red lipstick; my mouth stands out like a bloodstain on white porcelain.

Reinvigorated, driven by a perverse instinct, I rush to the wardrobe and put on a black dress, transparent stockings, and, as the icing on the cake, the cape cloak.

This way, I’ll really look like a ghost. And no one will dare approach me.

Guided by instinct, I stride, almost dancing, to the castle door, which opens with a very deep creak.

No trace of the baron. He must be busy tonight.

What better thing could he do than to look after me?

Annoyed by the situation, excited by the idea of being alone, I suddenly remove my boots, myself surprised by such an unpredictable act.

Let’s see what snow can do to me.

As I step outside, the cold hits me hard, but my temperature immediately readjusts. I close my eyes, breathless. My bare feet take a few steps on the icy slabs, then stop.

The temperature assaults me violently.

Come on, focus. Screw the cold.

My senses heightened by the cold that punctures my skin with a thousand needles, I enter the courtyard with newfound confidence.

The night clothes me in darkness like a fur coat. The moon illuminates the frozen fountain like a distant spotlight set to low power. But the outlines of each object, from the low wall to the pines overlooking the forest, shine distinctly, as if vibrating on my retina.
